‘My children have never owned school shoes like these. I sell groundnuts to survive, but today I feel deeply grateful”
For many learners in the communities we serve, a school uniform is the difference between staying home and showing up confidently to learn. In 2025, our partnership with Tailored for Education (TFE) helped restore that confidence for thousands of children across Nairobi and Kisumu, strengthening their sense of belonging and making school a place where they feel safe, equal, and valued.
This year, we reached 8,730 learners across 35 community schools, marking the largest phase of uniform distribution since we began this journey together in 2012. And while the numbers are significant, the real story lies in the joy, dignity, and hope we witnessed in classrooms, schoolyards, tailoring workshops, and homes.
Why this program matters
In low-cost communities, a school uniform is one of the biggest barriers to learning. Many children attend school in torn or mismatched clothes, which affects their confidence and exposes them to stigma. Some stay home completely because their families cannot afford a uniform.

By providing complete sets (uniforms, shoes, socks, and undergarments) this partnership helps remove that barrier. It restores dignity, boosts attendance, and creates a sense of equality among children from different backgrounds.
We select schools based on vulnerability, leadership commitment, and readiness to engage parents. This ensures that support reaches learners with the greatest need, while empowering schools to make the most of the opportunity.
What this partnership means to Dignitas

Working with Tailored For Education complements our Teacher Professional Development (TPD) work in a meaningful way. When children feel confident and comfortable, teachers are able to create stronger learning environments. They see higher attendance, improved participation, and healthier school culture.
Parents also play an active role. After distributions, schools mobilize small voluntary parental contributions to support improvement projects such as:repairing classrooms, rebuilding toilets, purchasing textbooks, improving sanitation etc
This project reinforces shared responsibility and helps communities invest in better learning conditions.
Stories from the field
Across all communities, we met children, teachers, and parents whose voices reminded us why this work matters.
At Bright Promise School, many learners come from families that have fled conflict in South Sudan, the DRC, and Rwanda. Teachers shared how these learners used to feel exposed wearing torn home clothes that made them stand out.
On distribution day, one teacher told us:
“You could see the relief on their faces. A uniform made them feel like part of the school again.”

Kisumu was a new expansion area for this project. During our first visits, we found many children learning in tattered clothes.
Monicah, a parent from Sharlem Gardens, shared:
“My children have never owned school shoes like these. I sell groundnuts to survive, but today I feel deeply grateful.”
School leaders also reported increased enrollment after the uniform distribution.
What the future holds
As we look to 2026, our goal is to continue reaching the most marginalized learners while improving the efficiency, tracking, and delivery of uniform items. Our belief is that; children learn best when they feel they belong. Uniform distribution opens doors to dignity, confidence, and opportunity.
And with partners like Tailored for Education walking with us, thousands more children will continue stepping into school ready to learn, grow, and dream.
