When Dignitas founders Tiffany and Bobby began crafting the vision and mission for Dignitas in 2008, they spent a lot of time in the community speaking to churches, schools and families.  They asked many questions, and one question persistently, “What would make a difference in your community?”  The overwhelming answer?  Education!  Children wanted to learn.  Parents were desperate for a good education for their child.  Anyone working in the community could see clearly that if children were able to thrive in school, they would likely have a bright future ahead.

However, sadly, it is not always that simple.  Not only is access to school a huge challenge for children living in urban informal settlements, but quality is a common gap.  In fact, the quality of education is so poor, and this problem so widespread that earlier this year, World Bank declared a global learning crisis.  This builds on the globally agreed ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ which make quality a priority in order to build on gains in access seen in recent years.

I think of my own experience, growing up in a country where quality education was a given, and government provision was excellent.  That is something I will be eternally grateful for.  I think of my own children, each one with their own personality, strengths and struggles, and each one with the opportunity to thrive in school.  I, and the entire team at Dignitas, want this to be true for EVERY child.  Every child should have the opportunity to learn, to thrive and to succeed.  EVERY child deserves an excellent education. EVERY child deserves the opportunity to dream, and to declare #IWantToLearn!  Where you live, the jobs your parents have, or the school you attend, shouldn’t determine your chance to thrive.  Please join us on #GivingTuesday to ensure that ALL children have the chance to thrive.  Please join us so that EVERY child gets the education they deserve.
