As we continue celebrating #WorldTeachersDay2025 , we’re spotlighting educators who have embodied this year’s theme: “Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession.”
Teachers are collaborators, mentors, and leaders who build learning communities where every child has a chance to thrive. Their creativity and commitment shape not only classrooms but also the future of their communities.
One such teacher is Tr. Boniface, a Grade 4 teacher at Raila Primary School in Kibra. Through training and support from Dignitas and SHOFCO, he has transformed his classroom into a learner-centered space where collaboration is at the heart of learning and every child has a voice. His journey shows how empowering teachers with skills and support doesn’t just change lessons — it changes lives. Recently, he shared his experiences of how training through Dignitas and SHOFCO has strengthened both his teaching practice and his learners’ confidence.
From Traditional to Learner-Centered Teaching
Boniface has been teaching under Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which has shifted the focus from the old 8-4-4 system toward more holistic, learner-centered approaches. Before his training, classes were mostly teacher-driven, with learners as passive listeners.
“Initially, the method that we were using was 8-4-4, it was teacher-centered, where the teacher was doing everything during the teaching process,” Boniface explained. However, through training sessions facilitated by Dignitas, he learned how to implement learner-led strategies such as group discussions that encourage active participation.
Learners now take ownership of their learning, and the retention of knowledge is much higher,” he reflected.
Strategies for Engaging Large Classes
Handling 75 learners in one class is no easy feat. Boniface shared practical ways to ensure every learner, even those who are quieter or sit at the back, stays engaged. Grouping learners based on their abilities allows him to tailor tasks—giving more challenging activities for faster learners, and simplified tasks to those who need additional support.
More importantly, Boniface walks around during lessons, checking on groups and personally engaging quieter students. This hands-on approach helps him identify who needs more assistance and encourages participation from all learners.
One learner, who was previously very quiet in class, has blossomed after group discussions were introduced. “She is now able to articulate herself better,” Boniface reflected.
The Role of Dignitas in Supporting Teachers
Tr. Boniface greatly values the training and support from Dignitas and Shofco. Beyond teaching methodologies, the program helped him build stronger teacher-child relationships and understand how to include learners from diverse backgrounds.
“The training showed us how to ensure all learners, regardless of their challenges at home, can move forward with their education,” Boniface said. This holistic approach to empowerment equips teachers not only with skills but with compassion and insight, vital for improving learning outcomes.
Tips for Fellow Educators
From Boniface’s experience, here are some key takeaways for teachers aiming to enhance engagement and learning in their classrooms:
- Embrace learner-centered activities: Empower learners to lead discussions and work collaboratively in groups.
- Know your learners: Identify each learner’s strengths and weaknesses to tailor tasks effectively.
- Be hands-on: Circulate in your classroom and engage quieter learners to make them feel included.
- Make the most of available resources: Even limited technology can be useful if leveraged creatively.
- Build relationships: Understand each learner’s background and needs to provide supportive teaching.
Looking Ahead
At Dignitas, our mission is to empower educators like Boniface by providing training, resources, and ongoing coaching and mentorship. When teachers thrive, learners thrive, and communities prosper. As Boniface puts it, “When learners are empowered, they can change their future.” We are proud to support teachers like him as they innovate and inspire in classrooms across Kenya.
