*Shujaa is a Swahili word that means hero. Kenya celebrates Mashujaa Day on 20th October of every year.

Despite the numerous challenges faced in the education sector, teachers continue to nature and shape the lives of the young generation. Teachers play a significant role in inspiring children to achieve their goals.

I closely followed the stories people shared during World Teachers’ Day. The observations sparked some memories. During my school days, teachers were considered as the second parent as they played a critical role in developing the character of children. A lot of teachers dedicate their time to students which is evidenced by how they guide young students to read and write.

During my field work, I have met teachers who go out of their way to provide students with basic needs to facilitate their wellbeing and school attendance. Some teachers provide lunch, clothing and even waiver school fees so that struggling students can access education.

Teachers facilitate student’s curiosity and creativity and support them to pursue their goals. They use instructional techniques and lesson materials that ensure maximum student engagement. Additionally, teachers wear the mentorship hat, providing career counselling to students and guiding them to visualize their path to achieve their dreams.

It is interesting that teachers’ pride and success is deeply rooted in student achievement, not only in their academic scores but lifelong success. Teachers exhibit several heroic acts and hence deserve to be celebrated as Kenyan Shujaas.

To all the teachers, we celebrate you as our Shujaa today!
