We have a fantastic team at Dignitas and we would love to introduce you to each member over the coming months.

Today, we interview Maurine Makena about her role at Dignitas and why she believes strongly in the work that we do. Maurine’s work is often ‘behind-the-scenes’, but it is critical to our growth, learning, and impact. Welcome Maurine!

What is your role on the team? I am the Learning and Evaluation Officer.

How long have you been working at Dignitas? One year, three months.

What kind of activities does your role involve? I organize the team to conduct different program evaluations, data analysis and report writing and then present results from the evaluation to the team for organizational learning.

“Being part of the Dignitas L&E team makes me feel like I contribute to something meaningful. I feel like I contribute to making the world a better place.”

Why is the Learning and Evaluation team so critical to the work that we do?

Our team is like the mirror in the organization. We keep track of all our interventions and get back to the team on what we have achieved as an organization, what we have done well and what we could do better. The results we get help us to learn and adjust our priorities and interventions in order to serve our schools better.

Your favorite thing about being part of the L&E team and working at Dignitas?

It feels very good when we collect and analyze data from our schools and see the improvement of our teachers and schools over time. Also the fact that there is a lot of learning in the L&E team.

Why do you believe quality education is important in Kenya?

Education opens up the mind to many possibilities. Kenyan children and youth need quality education so that they can create and innovate solutions to some of the challenges they face within their communities. Quality education will also help them contribute to the development of the country in the near future.

Who was your favorite teacher when you were at school?

My favorite teacher was my primary school Science teacher, Mr. Kiruja. He was concerned with my well being and believed in my ability to excel especially in Maths and Science.

And lastly, what is your favorite quote or personal motto?

Happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything, but they make the most of everything.
